Can i use thinset for grout

I used this method when I started repairing a mess I made of a little path last fall, but I'm not ready to show pictures yet. I plan to finish mosaicing the path very soon, using this method, so I'll post pictures then. Go for it and show us a WIP. Slow, thank you. I really don't want to deal with grout too, then sealing on top of that. Now can I smooth the thinset after it has come up, so it isn't lumpy looking? If any gets on the tiles, will it come off later, like it does with grout when it dries?

New stone shower floor - seal or not to seal? Has anyone used this grout. Is it necessary to seal grout with porcelain tiles? If it gets on the tiles and drys, it's pretty hard to remove, but it CAN be done. I keep a bucket of water nearby and wash my fingers often to keep from spreading it all over new set tiles. We "accidentally" used thinset yesterday on our laundry sink splash back and countertop project.

It was the same colour as our grout and we grabbed the wrong bucket. As noted above by other posters you have to clean off the excess cement quickly from the tiles before it dries cause it's hard to remove once it dries.

I'm still going to use sealer cause the tilles we used are slate and the sealer enhances the colour of the slate. The sealer I'm using is easily wiped on with a clean cloth and wipe the excess of with a clean cloth.

No tedious brush work required. Your butterflies are just so lovely, Silvamae. Adore the white one. What do you use for the body and antennae? And, do you grind the edges of the outer glass so they aren't sharp? Still with the newbie questions, sorry!

Just so much mosaic eye candy! Until you balance out the pH, your skin won't heal. It is usually used to attach tile or stone to surfaces such as cement or concrete. The terms thinset cement, thinset mortar , dryset mortar , and drybond mortar are synonymous. The most likely dangers of using it too thick are cracks see photo , delamination, and lippage. Please note that the thinset being shown as a patch in the previous pictures is one designed to be used on plywood an ANSI A If you try to do that with an el-cheapo thinset , good luck.

In addition, coarse grout contains larger aggregates than mortar or fine grout. Concrete shouldn't be substituted for grout either. The coarse aggregate in concrete generally is too large for most masonry grout cavities. Also, in cast-in-place concrete , low water-cement ratios are important for strength. Grouting in civil engineering refers to the injection of pumpable materials into a soil or rock formation to change its physical characteristics.

Grout may also be used in the formation of pile foundations, ground anchors, under-reaming, underpinning, in road construction, dam construction, and other applications.

While cement grout is frequently used in tile work, it's really not the best choice. Cement -based grout products are thinner than mortar and building cement , allowing it to flow better into cracks and other areas. Does grout offgas, and — if so — are the fumes toxic? Cement grouts such as Portland cement are easily inhaled, and the fine silica particles found in the grout can cause breathing issues.

In fact, even a small amount of silica dust presents a health hazard. A grout is any viscous, packable material that can be used to fill the space between two elements for bonding them or to create a water-tight seal. But of course, it is not easy to work with gloves… when I mix grout or thinset I try to wash my hands with clean water and dry them up often. Generally my skin gets a little dry after I manipulate thinset or grout. Olive oil usually takes care of this. Grout has a low structural strength and does not stick to surfaces as well as thinset.

It sets quickly 10 to 30 minutes and needs to be cleaned up shortly after use. Grout is mostly cosmetic, it is a filling material that flows between the tiles and sets there. It makes the whole mosaic look better, and easier to clean up. It is thicker and more durable than unsanded grout, but the sand in it can damage smooth tiles by abrasion. If you do not like the color of your grout you can correct it with cement stains — I often add black stain to my charcoal grout to blacken it.

I prefer the powdered to the liquid stains. You can also use acrylic paint to make very colorful grouts. However, I have observed acrylic — cement mixtures do not always age well and tend to shrink and crack. This problem is solved by mixing grout and thinset together or sometimes using thinset alone instead of grout.

Adjust the color with cement stains, and remember that because thinset cures much slower and harder than grout :.

On reverse method we build our mosaic upside down. Then we apply thinset on top of it to glue its support above it. Once the thinset has cured, we flip the mosaic. Sometimes the thinset shows between the tiles, leaving no space between them to apply the grout of the right color.

Once it is cured, I smear the thinset over it to glue the support on top of the mosaic. Even today, building such monuments would represent a technical challenge. Thinset is made to be structurally stronger than grout, as strong bonding is needed between the floor tiles and the subfloor.

Before grouting the spaces between your recently installed tiles, you should at least allow enough time for the thinset adhesive beneath the tiles to dry. Typically, it takes about 48 hours for thinset to completely dry up. If you apply grout before the thinset underneath has cured, you run the risk of tiles cracking as you step on them. This is because the grout cuts off the air supply to the thinset below, further delaying the completion of the curing process.

And since wet thinset cannot effectively facilitate adhesion, your tiles will either get misaligned or crack under pressure.
