How do softball tryouts work




















Tips for a great tryout: Dress like a travel softball player. Yoga pants or athletic shorts were fine in a rec ball practice but this is the big leagues. Tuck your shirt in, wear a belt. Your tryout starts in the parking lot.

As soon as you get out of the car someone is watching you. Carry your own gear! Bring water. Do not approach your parents for anything. Be self-sufficient! Be respectful to your parents! Someone will be watching you at all times. A college recruiter told me once that his school had his eyes on a player so he went to a showcase tournament to take a look at her. He watched her game and was amazed by her talent. Later that day the recruiter was behind the player and her mom at the concession stand.

That recruiter later told her he saw all he needed from the way she spoke to her mother and never offered her a spot. This should go without saying but in case you need the reminder. Hustle everywhere; to and from the field, going up to hit, during drills, etc. Sometimes during a tryout, you spend a lot of time in lines…. Listen well, look coaches in the eye and be coachable Look good failing Softball is a game of errors how you handle them is important.

Look like a Player — Make sure to wear softball attire. No jeans. Possibly wear a shirt that has your name on the back so coaches remember your name. Stay away from and avoid all communications with your parents. Talk and Smile — Introduce yourself and talk to coaches; engage with other players on the field.

Dive, lay out for balls, and always be in attack mode. Look Good Failing — mistakes will happen, so forget about it immediately. Ask Questions — Be sure to ask questions if you are unsure of something in order to get a better understanding. Show that you can always give your best effort no matter what. This Spring training class will knock the dust off and allow players to work on fielding, batting, and pitching. With a professional coaching staff instructing players, these athletes are guaranteed quality instruction and reps to polish or even improve their skill set! You need to be prepared and have the proper clothes and gear with you to the tryouts. At a minimum you should have your own glove.

If you have a bat and batting gloves bring those as well. Naturally they are looking for the best possible players. However, that is not only based on how well the girls perform the skills on the field. Attitude, coach-ability, hustle, positive attitude and general athleticism are just as important. Most coaches will take girls with good skills, potential, attitude and hustle over well-skilled players with a bad attitude any day.

This goes for parents as well. A parent who is negative, obnoxious to other parents, criticizes their player or worse other girls or is rude to the coach will make a coach think twice before drafting your child. Once the tryouts are over you will find out whether you made the team or what team you are on if they were league-wide tryouts.

It may take a few days for the results. Each team you play on will offer opportunities to improve your skills and learn something new. If you want to continue playing after the season is over just make sure to put in the time and effort during the off season to improve your skills and attitude before the next tryout.
